Synopsis

The monograph presents conceptual solutions and results of many years of industrial research into the technology of melting cast iron for mechanical engineering castings based on the use of an electric arc furnace. Two duplex melting processes are considered: “cupola furnace – electric arc furnace” and “electric arc furnace – electric arc furnace”. The latter process involved combining the processes of melting and thermo-time treatment of the melt in one furnace.

Procedures for finding optimal control of the melting and thermo-time treatment process according to a compromise criterion are proposed, which includes the requirement of minimizing energy consumption, minimizing the downtime of the casting conveyor due to the lack of melt discharged from the furnace, and maximizing the quality of cast iron in terms of chemical composition.

The procedures for synthesizing the optimal speed control of the processes of carbon saturation of the melt, bath heating and the optimal temperature controller of the electric arc furnace, which operates as an element of the "electric arc furnace – casting conveyor" mass service system, are presented. The options for controlling the operation of the electric arc furnace, which is represented by an automatic machine of the melting and casting technological system, are considered. The monograph may be of interest to scientists, researchers, foundry engineers, and may also be useful for applicants for scientific degrees.
